I was right. Shawn's ETD is Friday morning now. And I even think it'll be pushed back again. After I got home from work I drove over to his place so he and J.D. could borrow my car. Neither of them has a car right now...Greyhound bus to Richmond anyone? While Shawn and J.D. took the car to Home Depot, Kari (J.D.'s girl) and I watched Murder by Numbers. GOOD FLICK. She was holding Mia and my little girl spit up all in Kari's hair. I felt so bad. She had just gotten her hair colored at the salon this morning. I felt bad, but what can ya do? If you're holding a baby, it's a risk. Kari didn't seem to mind, though. She's a sweet girl.


I am going in to work for a while today to get some of the "orientation" out of the way. I guess today I will be watching videos. I should learn a lot, after all, I already worked there for three weeks before I had Mia. Whatever they say...as long as they don't keep my from my baby for too long.

And the baby sleeps. And sleeps...and sleeps. My girl had a long and busy weekend. Meghan and Brian flew in on Friday and flew out yesterday evening. Auntie Meghan adores her little niece. And Mia just loves her Auntie and Uncle. So, it was a nice weekend, but I think Mia is happy and feeling safe in Mommy's arms now. She was passed around so much and being adored by everyone, she missed her Mommy bunches!! Shawn also came by to visit and Mia just loves looking at her Daddy. He's leaving on Thursday now or something...but if my intution is right, the ETD will be delayed at least one more time.

It's late, but it's here: PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.43: 1. Ever do anything over and over just to make someone else happy but discover you actually hate it? Of course, usually I did stuff for Shawn. For example, I hate answering the phone after 1am. 2. What kinds of obligations do you enjoy? I don't know what I'd consider an obligation. I guess you can consider being an attentive mother an obligation...I don't know though. I like being an attentive Mommy, so it certainly doesn't feel like an obligation. 3. What are your feelings about celebrating Halloween? I think it's a fine tradition. I don't know about the candy part, but I like dressing up and going to Halloween parties (no parties this year). 4. Are there any stories of bodily functions you would prefer people not share with you in conversation? As long as the bodily functions don't OCCUR during coversation, speaking of them isn't necessarily horrible. It depends on how graphic the speaker gets. 5. What do you think is the most important aspect of personal hygiene that bothers you when people overlook it? Um. Everything? I think it's especially gross, though, when people don't wear deodorant. 6. Ponder the thought of being forever young, living on endlessly, being immortal. What would that life be like for you? Boring. 7. What's the last thing you felt was "worth fighting for?" It wasn't a fight, but until Shawn actually held Mia, he wasn't convinced the whole "Daddy" thing would work out. Now he's in love. With the baby, of course. BONUS: Sooner or later, they all will be gone...why don't they stay young? Sorry, pal, it's just the way things go. Even milk gets old.

Right. So I've blogged about how WEIRD my neighbors are...whoa. So WeirdGirl comes to my door and asks, "Can I use your phone?" I was sort of concerned that she might be in trouble, locked out of her house...so NO PROBLEM. COME ON IN.

So I ask her, "Is everything okay." "Yes." "Are you locked out of your house?" "No." She's rude, but I say nothing. She takes the phone, gets out her electronic phone book... a drugstore palmpilot of sorts. The first 3 numbers she dialed were apparently busy because "of course, everyone's gotta be on the internet."

The first friend she gets ahold of "Can I come over? I have nothing to do." I'm sure the person on the other line appreciated being a last resort and the self-invitation from the girl in my living room. Apparently, she can't go to this kid's house 'cause she called another one and asked the same thing. Between calls she managed to ask "What's your children going to be for Halloween?" My *singular* child is going to be a pumpkin. WeirdGirl thought that was cute. Anyway, after the second friend rejected her, they plunged deeply into a conversation about the Anime Film Festival and what Anime character WeirdGirl dressed up as. She wasn't Queen Blahblahblah because "Dessa woulda freaked out."

I would refer to her as something other than WeirdGirl, but that's what she is, and I don't know her name. She must not know my name either...I'm assuming one of the friends she called asked where she was calling from because she said "I don't know, these people's house." Right, like her next door neighbor. And darn it, right when she got comfortable sitting on the floor, WeirdDad (recall the first time I met him he told me about his military wife leaving him for another woman. Don't ask, don't tell? I didn't ask.) comes to the door and says "What is my daughter doing here" He seemed amused or something. "Oh she's just using the phone." "Oh good cause I gotta call in a pizza." Uhhhhhh...sure, go ahead.

The reason they couldn't use THEIR phone?? Disconnected?? No. Out of order?? No. Other daughter "tying up the line." Yes. Aceholes.

Shawn is moving to Richmond on Sunday. It sucks, but at least they've caught the sniper(s), so I don't have even MORE to worry about. Shawn, Mia & I had lunch together today, and then the two of them took a nap together. No matter how mad he makes me, nothing pleases me more than seeing Mia so content with her Daddy.

Some of you may recall a shout that appreared in my shoutbox not too long ago. Actually I'm surprised it's not still there, since no one ever has ANYTHING to put in there. ANYWAY, it was left by a Hockey Fanatic, and today I had pleasure of speaking with him about a topic that I have always been interested in:

Hootress: So. Do you find that most hockey players have mullets?
Hockey Fanatic: good question.
Hockey Fanatic: I think it's a culture thing.
Hootress: How do you mean? Canadian culture? Or redneck culture?
Hockey Fanatic: european culture.
Hootress: REALLY. So the mullet originated in Europe? I didn't know they played a whole lot of hockey in Europe.
Hockey Fanatic: in some countries, hockey is part of the curriculum.
Hootress: Hmmm. Like in Norway and other freezing cold countries?
Hockey Fanatic: yes.. like those countries.. Russia, Czechoslovakia,.. Finland.. Sweeden.. those countries too.
Hootress: So they have mullets there?
Hockey Fanatic: some do.
Hockey Fanatic: i think the trend is swinging back in favor of short hair though.
Hootress: I guess what I'm trying to get at is, why does there seem to be an abundance of mullets in hockey and not any other sport? Of course it has a diverse group of people that participate in the sport, but the same is true of baseball...not so many mullets.
Hockey Fanatic: well... I think the appeal is the wild nature that some people enjoy.. I think they like the hair flowing around in back.. I can't speak for them personally.. I don't have a mullet.
Hootress: That's good to know.

It's the "business in front, party in the back" kinda look that hockey players seem to prefer. Question the style, don't question the reason behind it.

Moms have to wonder all the time: What the 'H' is my baby dreaming about?? Mia was in a deep slumber early this afternoon (I, of course, was watching her), when out of nowhere she jumped as if she was startled and let out a little yell. She didn't wake up, and right after it happened it seemed it never did. It was almost like she was having a "falling" dream. I've had one or two of those. When babies dream, where are they falling from? Are they being dropped? What's going on in those little noggins?

I'd like to know what arsehole put my phone number in the hands of every intoxicated male in America last night. I've got one guy calling me at 1:52am asking how to keep some chick from following him home. To that guy: You are 6'2" and probably 180+lbs. I think you can deal with that one on your own. JUST SAY NO. Then at 4:39am, I've got another guy (guess who this ass is) calling to see if I'm going to his mom's house this morning with Mia and asking if he can go. To that guy: You're DAMN lucky I was in the middle of changing a diaper when you called. If I hadn't been up already, you would have paid for even the call you did not make. And OF COURSE you can go to YOUR mom's house with me, but next time, how about responding to the e-mail invitation I sent a week in ADVANCE so as to prevent any further phone calls in the wee hours. To EVERY guy: If you're drunk, if you've had only ONE beer, if you're sober, let's try calling someone ELSE for useless advice or call at a reasonable hour. Consider it a COURTESY to me and MY BABY, you ARSES!

There is a quote I've heard numerous times illustrating the ever so thin line that falls somewhere between love and hate. The reason for that, as many before me have probably concluded, is that to love someone or to hate them, feelings are present. You can't effectively "not care" if you hate. And you can't hate if you don't care. This all brings me to the lesson I learned tonight. The feelings I feel (or don't feel) for Shawn are muddled somewhere in a patch of greyish-hate and definite resentment. My feelings are always masked (except when I vent on my site) and maybe that's not good for me, but vocalizing those feelings wouldn't be good for my girl. I'm rambling so I'll cut to the chase: I talked to a close friend tonight and he told me that Shawn had met someone (though she's no longer in the picture) that he thought could be "the one." I KNOW Shawn is not the one for me. He's been sweet ever since Mia came into our lives, but it's impossible to erase how NOT sweet he was before she was here and even while we were waiting for her to arrive. It's just irritating to think that he had those feelings for someone else when he used to feel that way about me, and things went sour when HE squeezed the lemon. Not me.

But what Cindy helped me realize is that Shawn doesn't recognize what a good person I AM, because of the good person he's not inclined to be most of the time. I never thought that being too good for someone would blind that person from seeing how good I actually am.

Did anyone see my away message? "Don't park your white van across the street from my house, I WILL call the police." And that's exactly what I did. There is a dead end street that faces my house, and tonight, there is a white Ford Aerostar parked in the middle of that dead end street with its lights on. I was not going to BE a Target, on my WAY to Target, so I called the VBPD and asked them to check it out so I could leave the house with my 1 month old little girl and feel comfortable doing so. It turned out to be nothing, or no one, I guess, but it's always better to be safe than shot. And a Ford Aerostar does look sorta like an Astro...and do any of those witnesses know what they really saw anyway??

I took some really nice still shots of Mia and Shawn (with the DigiCam) this afternoon. Mom tried taking some shots of me (so did Shawn) but I just wasn't happy with them. **DELETED**...gotta love a digital camera!! Anyway, I don't know how to get the photos from the camera to the computer. I'm working on it though: I installed the necessary drivers, but for some reason my computer isn't recognizing my new stuff. Keep an eye on your boxes...e-mailboxes, that is.


Last night was awesome. Amy (another former Hootress) organized a going-away/birthday dinner at The Melting Pot Fondue Restaurant at Hilltop Shopping Center. IT WAS SO GOOD. The meal had 4 courses. The first was the appetizer course: bread, apples, and raw vegetables that had cheddar and swiss fondue pots. Then we were served a salad with REALLY good Honey Mustard dressing. The third course was the meat and vegetable course. We got lobster tails, shrimp, filet mignon, and some other meat. The meats and the vegetables were all served raw and then had to be cooked in the fondue pot. That was all delightful :) THEN came dessert. We got a platter of cheesecake, pound cake, marshmallows, brownies, strawberries, pineapple chunks, and banana slices with a milk chocolate fondue pot and a flaming turtle pot. It was sooooooo yummy. For those of you in the VA Beach area, I highly recommend it.

Mia and her dad got some more time in today. It's really wonderful that he calls so often to come over and see Mia. But he doesn't have an operable vehicle at the moment...so I need to pick him up and drop him off. 99% of the time, that is NO problem. But tonight, he wanted to go home in the middle of a rainstorm that came complete with Flash Flood warnings for VA Beach and Norfolk. LOVELY. I put on the blinkers and travelled at a speed I felt comfortable with (WELL below the speed limit), and he had the nerve to ask me not to take the long way (the way that AVOIDED low areas that would OBVIOUSLY be flooded). FINE if he happened to be my only passenger, but our Mia was in the car, and you KNOW I took that long way with a smile on my face. It took nearly 2 hours, but we didn't get stuck, and Mia didn't complain.

Mia also got some Grammie time in when Shawn and I went to BestBuy to get this. Once I figure everything out, we'll be golden.

Mia and I went for another ride in the car today. She was a little fussy on the way home and guess what calmed her down! Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You." I like that song, and as long as it wasn't technically a boy band like N Suck or the Backdoor Boys that she enjoyed so much, that's fine with me :)

So I was wrong. Mia did not wake up at 330am. She woke up at 310am. Not a problem, though. She's even adorable in the middle of the night...or morning. She woke up again at 645am and then finally at 945. We got ready for the day, went to the drugstore, and to Old Navy. Good times and cute little pink rugby onesies :) YAY. I got some pictures back also. I sent them out to several people, and once I have my blogger upgraded to the point where I can handle everything on my own, I will create a photo gallery. Until then, all the readers I have that don't actually know me personally are going to have to wait on that. Lo siento.

Sound asleep :) Mia stayed up for a lot of the day today. Hopefully she'll sleep through the night; she hasn't done that yet...unless you count 2am to 6am :) I've had to survive on that much sleep once or twice, back in the day. But I rocked her to sleep, and her normal sleeping patern predicts she'll wake up around 330am. But like I said, she was up for a lot of the day. So we'll see.

I've discovered that the error message I've been getting every time I try to post and publish my site was spurred by a glitch in my archives. They've temporarily been removed, as I can't figure out the archive template and how to correct the problem. So when BDB catches a minute from Beth or needs to come up for some air, we'll see if he can't fix that :)

On time this week: PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.40: 1. I just got back from a family reunion. It was ok, but I find those gatherings a little boring. Does your family ever have any reunions or annual get-togethers? Do you enjoy them? My "big" family (my dad's side) lives in Ohio, so I unfortunately don't see them very often. They have all kinds of crazy get-togethers. My dad is one of 11 (10 surviving) children, most of which are married with kids...and then their kids have kids...BIG family. The most anticipated family gathering they have, for me, is the Christmas Eve gathering now hosted by Aunt Maureen and Uncle Doug. I make it every other year, now that I have to split big holidays between split-up parents. It's my favorite because it's the one gathering that pretty much everyone in the family is guaranteed to be at :) TwinnieTwin: I'll be hunting you down first. 2. A gal I work with told me that when her husband's drivers licsence comes up for renewal, she swipes it. She says he won't ever pose for pictures and that's the only way she can get a photo of him. Is that not creepy? Are you a picture person? Do you like taking photos, and having yours taken? I love taking pictures and I love being in them, too :) And I LOVE putting them in frames all over my room. 3. Time for show and tell: post a recent photo of yourself! Recent? No. I've got 5 more lbs. of baby weight to shed. You guys can wait. 4. I have a cousin I always knew as Jay. As he got into college, he began to go by Greg. Turns out is name was Greg, Junior. Jay was short for Junior! Can't blame him for changing it. Did you ever have a nick-name growing up? How did it come about? Did you ever give anyone a nickname that stuck? I prefer not to talk about it. 5. Since I don't have cable, a friend promised to send me a few episodes of "Trading Spaces," the show where folks redecorate someone else's home (and I'm still waaaaiiiting on that tape). But that got me to thinking about how I'd change my own house if I were able. And the room I'd do first would be the bathroom. If you could design the bathroom of your dreams, what would it be like? Spare no expense! It would have to have a large standing shower with two shower heads, a marble stairway leading up to my bathtub (with jets) for two, set in marble. I want one of those toilets that has the water box suspended above it, instead of right behind. The sink...uh, nothing fancy, but fitting with the rest of the decor. And why not toss in a bidet?? 6. I've been trying to catch up on the early seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in re-runs, though I've been told to buy the DVDs. But I think I'd rather borrow them if I could. But there are a few television shows I'd like to own on DVD (like "The Flash" and "Max Headroom"). What shows (if any) do you own in a video collection? What TV shows would you like to see collected on DVD or video? None. 7. I recently watched "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang" again, first time since I was little. It held up pretty well, unlike some movies that are better in your memory than they are when you see them again (like "E.T." good movie, but for me, better as a memory). Do you have any favorite movies from your childhood? Do you think you would still enjoy them if you watched them today? WELL. The Homeless Guy was featured in this USA Today article. I found the article linked at cordle's site, and if I'm not mistaken that was also where I first learned that The Homeless Guy even had a website. And as cordle pointed out, he was linked to The Homeless Guy "before he was famous." And SO WAS I!! Woohoo! It's a good article, though. Check it out.


Well. It was quality time. Shawn came over this morning and spent some time with Mia. He ended up leaving not too long ago, actually. We made an Italian themed dinner and watched the Sopranos. Fun was had by all. Even Mia attempted a smile.

Everyone else has done it...PromoGuy calls it his "Thursday Thearch." Today's Saturday, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Here are some interesting search engine queries that have brought readers to my site: "homeless kelly clarkson", "hooters waitress pictures", "caught confessions", "fiery ranch doritos", "cordle", "ryan star pics", "savekaryn", "a bar/eating place in cancun", and my personal favorite, "hooters girls weight restrictions." I know from experience that Hooters doesn't fire pregnant girls, but I never saw any big girls at my location...


Wow. Talk about an overhaul. EXTREME and MANY thanks to Bunny for the new look of my site. She jazzed up Aunt Seester's site and I got so jealous, so I enlisted her help, too. I think it looks GRRRRRRRRREAT!!


Shawn came over again yesterday. He burped Mia and held her after she ate, and then she fell asleep on him. It was so cute. When we left to take him home and to work, Mia was sound asleep in the carrier/carseat. By the time we were on our way to Waterside...she was hungry and crying so Shawn gave me $1 and I pulled into the Waterside garage, drove up to the top floor, got in the backseat and fed my baby :) I hate how infant carseats are rear-facing. Obviously it's a safety thing, but it's so upsetting not to be able to see my baby girl. I need to get one of those mirror things to put up. Anyway...Shawn's coming over again tomorrow for some more QT with Mia.

He asked me what I thought about him moving to Richmond. What am I supposed to say? Am I supposed to beg him not to go? Or say "Can you leave sooner?" I don't understand what he wants from me. He doesn't need me to give him a reason to stay. There is a reason for him to stay sleeping in her cradle right now. It's not that far away, I guess. He said he'd visit and he'd like it if I brought Mia up to visit, too. We'll see what happens. One day at a time.

Mia and I had a fun day today. She slept...and she slept...and she slept some more, but THEN we went for a walk! The annoying neighbor kids were outside playing football, and of course the SUPER annoying one comes running up to me and asks (like an annoying kid who disregards the obvious) "Is that the baby?" Yes, it's THE baby. He thinks her name is "strange." I think it's strange that his annoying siblings knock on my door every ten minutes with questions about Hooters, but do I say anything? No. Because that would be RUDE. Anyway, as Mia and I continue on our walk (she was in the carrier) we heard one of the little girl neighbors' dads beckoning for her from a 100 ft. distance. When she bounded up the lawn to see what the mean man wanted, he yelled at her, reminding her (in case she forgot) that she is, in fact, a girl. And "young ladies don't play football." So we rolled our eyes...mine just rolled...Mia was asleep and hers rolled into the back of her head...but I'm sure she was just as annoyed as I was. Girls can play football. And right at the "turning around point" of our walk, some guy I don't know "dared to be so bold" and told me I looked good for having a baby as young as Mia is. To that man, should he ever read my website: Thanks!! And could you please tell Shawn that? Because he thinks I'm kinda "thick." : P

Better late than never: PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.39: 1. Who has authority over you? Uh. Me. 2. Where do you go to get a feeling of community? HOOTERS :) 3. What do you do, or have you done, in your life that "goes against the tide?" Whose tide? I think I'm surfing along pretty well. 4. Guilt can be a powerful weapon. Those who have mastered its power can very good at getting what they want. Have you ever used guilt to get you what you want? Have you ever had it used on you? How did you react? I'm sure I guilted my parents once or twice. I don't fall prey to a good guilt trip unless it's being laid on by someone I care about. 5. I was walking through the mall Friday night and saw a lot of teenagers who dressed really wild and just acted like idiots - not caring who was looking or what others thought. And I remember being that way, having that kind of freedom. I must have looked like a fool then too. Did you ever do anything in public with your friends as a teenager that you would never do today? Tell me about that. I acted that way all the time in high school. I still don't care too much what other people think, but I always try to act civilized. 6. I don't watch the television show "Survivor," but I did notice they allow each contestant to bring one "luxury item" to the deserted island with them (make-up, a book, etc.). If you were to go to an island for three months, what five "luxury items" would you bring and why? Does Mia count as a luxury? Because I wouldn't go without my Mia. So ASSUMING she's invited to the island with me, I'd bring shampoo, conditioner, a Brita water filtering system, a beach umbrella, and Mia's diaper bag :) 7. If you would have had a choice, in which time period would you have like to have lived? Why? I am having a good time in this period :) But the 20s would be cool...maybe I would have been a flapper at a speakeasy instead of a Hooter girl :) BONUS: Where do you dare me to draw the line? On your forehead with a Sharpie.

Mia had her 2 week check-up yesterday...she gained 1lb in 10 days. That's my girl!! She's doing well...better than me, actually. After last night's episode of fever and chills, I went to the doctor and I have mastitis and that sucks. But they gave me a ridiculously expensive prescription ($61.82) and it should clear up soon. YAY. I was able to survive last night because Shawn was visiting once again and he took care of Mia (changing diapers, even) while I fought 102*. Shawn....shawn. Shawn thinks he's moving to Richmond at the end of the month. Stranger things than his plans actually working out HAVE happened, so we'll see.
