Support Your Troops!!

Just a suggestion.

I really think anyone even THINKING about being a military spouse should have to endure SOME type of time away from his/her significant other. There has to be SOME sort of "duty calls" involuntary trial separation. Whether it's 2 weeks or 2 months, heck! Make it a 6 month deployment!! It has to happen.

This other student at the clinic is 20. She's married. She's got a 2 month old. She and her Navy husband (who has been on shore duty since he enlisted not too long ago) are from Indiana.

I mentioned today that Rus is on his 6 month deployment (everyone else knows, but she never actually shows up to work).

She said, "I don't know what I'm going to do when my husband leaves. I couldn't handle a long distance relationship, THAT'S WHY WE GOT MARRIED."

[Insert my heart attack here]

Whoa. Being a military spouse/girlfriend requires a lot of strength. Strength of character, strength of will, strength of love. Cheers to all the military men and women that go and fight our nonsense wars VOLUNTARILY (for now), but cheers to the men and women over here that love and support them.

Love means putting on a front of togetherness when your loved one takes one step after the other closer to the pier. It means e-mailing and writing day after day not knowing for sure when/if you'll get a response. It means knowing the needs of your loved one well enough to fit them all inside a care package every couple weeks. It means holding down the fort at home. Support is fielding the tough questions from your kids..."when's Daddy coming home?" "'ere'd Rus go?". It's reminding those children how much the Mommy's, Daddy's and Rus' in the military love their children when they can't be there to tell them each themselves. Support is all those things ON TOP of the usual day-to-day stuff: getting the kids ready for the day, getting them to school, going to work, paying the bills. It's a lot of work.

I knew what I was getting into. I just hope this chick is up for the challenge.

Now, I could see if it was Smallpox...

But all this freaking out over a flu vaccine? It just seems a little crazy to me.

How long has the flu vaccine been on the market? 5 years? 10 years? People got the flu all the time. Sure, it's an inconvenience and it can be devastating to people with compromised immune systems...but millions of people survive it every year.

With all the hysteria, you would think the Hollywood ran out of Botox.

I really hope I don't get the flu this year. I probably will though just because of this post. But I'd rather be sick and kissing the porcelain for a few days than freaking out about a preventative shot (that only lasts for 3 months and only works against CERTAIN strains of the virus anyways) for months and months.

(no subject)

I've started Rus' first care package. It's got to include his birthday present (Nov. 4) so I can't say what's in it. He ventures over to my site from overseas every so often. :) But feel free to make suggestions for future packages, or better yet, ask me for his address so you can send something!

Mia and I made a Rus doll today. Forever ago, at Target, I bought these flexi-people figurines. The man and the woman ones are about 5.5-6" tall and the baby is 3". The faces pop out so you can put in a headshot of a loved one. I had left them with the original faces in there for so long, my mom had an idea that we put Rus' face in one so Mia can give him hugs and kisses when she wants to. So we did that today. It's so cute. She carries him around :)

I have to work at Hooters tonight...so I'm going to go start the transformation process :)

Over-Patriotic?

I was looking out the clinic window today, anxious to leave on my break.

There was a man standing at the front of my car...casually looking around. The kind of casual looking around someone who wants to make sure no one is watching him might do. So I watch him. I watch him as his walks to the rear of my car. I watch him as he takes my "Pray for our Troops" ribbon off the back of my car. I watch him as he puts it in the back seat of his own car.

Rus just left and Brian is getting ready to leave. You DON'T mess with my ribbon.

I removed my stethoscope and ran outside to confront The Patriot.

I said, "EXCUSE me, can I have that BACK please??"

And he looked at me like I'm a total idiot and says, "WHY?"

Uh. Why? You mean why did you STEAL my ribbom? WHY ARE YOU SO DUMB?

So I replied, "Because that's MY car."

And he says, "Oh. I'm sorry," and he gets it out of his car and hands it to me. The DOLT!!

I went inside and got my keys, took my break, and drove Rus' car back to the clinic.

Last night, I was trying to book my flight to Ohio for December to greet Elek. I was on the phone with Meghan while I was trying to do it and at some point, I hit the "back" button and my travel dates were reset and I ended up buying tickets for OCTOBER!! What a nightmare, right??

QIXO has great customer service. Right after you buy your tickets, a live one-on-one customer service conversation box comes up. I told Peter that I had made a terrible mistake and he FULLY refunded the tickets including the $40 QIXO service fee, which is normally non-refundable. There was a $12 charge for changing the dates after purchase, but $12 is good because the site says the fee for that can be up to $100!!

So Peter changed my travel dates, the airline company has me booked (I called to make sure) and the e-ticket is where it should be. I'm very excited!!

With Rus gone, it'll be nice to have so many distractions. Five weeks of extern, 2 weeks in Ohio...a REAL job. Mia, of course, WOULD be distraction enough if she didn't miss him as much as I do and ask where he is every 5 minutes.

Yeah. It's been awhile.

Mia started "daycare" yesterday. She spends 4ish hours a day with her in-home daycare provider. I've known the lady for awhile and my mom, Mia, and I went over to spend some "getting comfortable" time and then Mom took Mia back over there Monday for a few hours. Mia is doing very well. We're all happy about the arrangement.

Rus was running around getting ready for his deployment. He had some time off before he left and that was nice. I really can't post too much about that without getting all choked up. So...that's enough of that.

I've been spending my time at the clinic (8 hours a day). Good times. 4.5 more weeks of clinical and I'm done. FINALLY.

POST & COMMENTS CONTAIN SPOILERS

The Forgotten.

I wish I could forget going to see the movie. I saw a couple commercials for it, the same ones Rus saw. I read the review...which gave the movie kind of a B-/C+ overall. The review said NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING about aliens in the plot.

For those of you that DON'T know, I am totally petrified of aliens and things like that. The one complete episode of Unsolved Mysteries I've seen in my entire life was about alien abuction and missing time. I was probably 8 or 9. I slept on the floor in Meghan's room for 2 weeks. I'm afraid of the dark. I don't like being home alone. I can't see alien movies. I can't watch alien shows. I can't even watch The Untouchables because Robert Stack's voice is totally creepy to me now.

So The Forgotten. I first realized that there MIGHT be some alien action when Julianne Moore's character had run through the warehouse and stopped outside to see a strange cloud formation in the sky.

Then when the house exploded and the NSA guy was missing, I thought there was PROBABLY going to be some alien action. Let me tell you how bad that freaked me out.

At that point, Rus offered to leave. I thought to myself "Hey it's PG-13, you can do this, that's probably as bad as it gets." So I insisted I could handle it.

Then the Quest Air guy shows up at the house all unshootable. Not so bad, but DEFINITELY alien action.

But when Detective Pope was sucked into the sky out of nowhere, I was so startled I screamed (I wasn't the only one) and hid in Rus' shoulder and burst into tears (I'm pretty sure I was the only crybaby there).

So we left. And I don't know what happened after that. She was left alone at the house with the Quest Air guy. What happened? Did she get her kid back? What about Ash? Was the therapist in on it? If her husband forgot her, why didn't he? I don't know who else was taken by the aliens...what happened to the children??

If you've seen the movie in its entirety, please leave a not-so-detailed synopsis of the rest of the movie in my comments. Please. Thank you. :) I've already had two nightmares.
